Ex Naville III, Lot 174, 16 June 1922; Ex Sir Arthur Evans Collection

Note: The ideal weight of this aureus is indicated by the (retrograde) S field mark. (retrograde) S was the numerical equivalent of 60 in the Greek numbering system, and this aureus should have been struck at the weight of 1/60th of a pound (approximately 5.46 grams). Variations in weight of this issue, in reality, are relatively commonplace. The retrograde S is actually a form of the letter Xi and not Sigma, but I do not have a way of creating that character. Sigma = 200 and Xi = 60 in the Greek numbering system.

Constantius I, AE Follis, c.305/306, Group II, Serdica, Officina 4
IMP C FL VAL CONSTANTIVS P F AVG
Laureate head right, divergent laurel ties

28mm x 30mm, 7.06g
RIC VI, 12av (C for type)
Ex Vel Garnett Collection

Note: Unusual reverse composition - the celator forgot to engrave the exergual line and the exergual mark is expected to be . SM . SD . Also, this specimen is severely underweight from the expected range of 10.50g-9.25g, attributable partly to corrosion and partly to some small flan flaws on the obverse, but must have been quite underweight to begin.

Note: It appears as though the celator struggled a bit with the obverse legend - the first V in SEVERVS looks recut and the spacing toward the end of the legend is awkward.
