Note: The countermark satirizes the defeat of the French army by the Prussians at Sedan - a small town near the border with Belgium. It was the crucial battle in the 1870-71 Franco-Prussian War and became a rallying cry for the French anti-monarchists. Emperor Napeoleon III gave the order to raise a white flag at Sedan, formally surrendered to the Prussians the next day and was sent into exile in Germany. The battle was commemorated by many countermarks, engraved coins and satirical tokens that copied French 10 centimes. The Lille mint was the nearest French mint to the Belgium border.

Notes from Mitchiner: Fields lightly frosted. The Caisse d'Epargne de Paris, the Paris Savings Bank, was the first of its kind to be founded in France. It was founded in 1818, as cited on the jeton. It did not, however, make use of jetons de presence until the end of the century. The present type of jeton, the first issued by this Savings Bank, was distributed to Administrators present at the General Assembly of 11th May 1894. Jetons bearing the same designs have been distributed at subsequent General Assemblies; made in two qualities of silver, privy marked '1 Argent' and '2 Argent'.
