In 406 AD, the Vandals, under King Gunderic, first entered Gaul. In 409 they
settled in Spain for about 20 years. Pressure from the Visigoths forced them
into North Africa and in May 429, under King Gaiseric (successor of his
half-brother, Gunderic) organized and established their kingdom. The standard
reference for this material is "Western & Provincial Byzantine Coins of
the Vandals, Ostrogoths and Lombards and of the Empires of Thessalonica, Nicaea
and Trebizond in the British Museum" by Warwick Wroth, published by
Argonaut Inc., 1966. It is 344 pages and 42 plates.

Anonymous Vandalic Issue during Honorius (?), AE4, 395-423, North Africa
(Legend off flan)
Pearl-diademed, draped, cuirassed bust of Honorius (?) right
(Legend off flan)
Victory advancing left, wreath upward in right hand, palm in left
10mm, 0.87g
Wroth, Coins of the Vandals, Victory type of Victoria Avgg under Honorius,
1-11 (?)
Note: This coin is of unusually fine style and may be an official issue of the Roman Empire. The compact flan does not offer much help with
attributing the obverse with any certainty. I'm basing this attribution on other
pieces of somewhat similar style and fabric from the same collection in
which this piece came.
