Topical Collection - Architecture: Temples

Juba I, AR Denarius, 60-46 BC, North Africa-Numidia
REX . IV.BA
Diademed, draped bust of King Juba right, with pointed beard and hair in formal curls, scepter at shoulder
Neo-Punic legend on either side (Yubai hammamleket)
Octastyle temple
17mm x 18mm, 3.30g
Sear GCV, Vol II, 6607

Notes from Marvin Tameanko: "This coin, even in worn condition is quite rare. I identified the temple shown in an article in the Celator, December, 1991, as a national shrine temple in Juba I's capital city. It would be similar to the capitolium in Rome but was probably dedicated to a Punic deity something like Baal, who was the equivalent of Zeus. The temple is a blend of Greek, Roman and Carthaginian architectural detail. The flat roof is a Punic style. The same temple on a bronze coin appears in Price and Trell's 'Coins and Their Cities', no. 508, page 225."

Petillius Capitolinus, AR Denarius, 43 BC, Rome
PETILLIVS / CAPITOLINVS

Wreath enclosing monogram 18 of Queen Eunice, KD (denomination mark) below
23mm x 25mm, 7.95g
MacDonald 337/1

Note: MacDonald notes on p.68 "RPC I, p.330 suggests that the NO element of the monogram on this variety stands for "noummia", an indication of the denomination, but the NO element replaces the top part of the monogram as it appears on the second variety, and is so more likely to be part of the name expressed in the monogram than a separate abbreviation. No other coin of the Bosporus bears the name of the denomination, though the number of units is commonly expressed on the bronze coinage."

Ex Bassem Daou

Authenticated and historical content provided by David R. Sear on 4/14/2003:

The great Phoenician metropolis of Tyre was a place of considerable antiquity, though it is said to have originated as a colony of its rival city of Sidon.  In 332 BC, it put up a stubborn resistance to the advance of Alexander the Great, but ultimately fell to the Greek invaders.  Later, it formed part of the overseas empire of the Ptolemaic kings of Egypt and, at the end of the 3rd century BC, it passed under control of the Seleucid kings of Syria.  Finally, in 126/5 BC, Tyre regained its autonomy and many of its subsequent coin issues are dated from this event.  These include the famous 'shekels' and 'half-shekels' which stretch in an almost unbroken sequence down to Roman Imperial times.

This 'quasi-autonomous' provincial bronze of Tyre was issued in the 2nd century AD, during the time of the Adoptive Emperors (Nerva to Hadrian) or that of the Antonine Emperors (Antoninus Pius to Commodus).  It bears no imperial name and was issued simply in the name of the City of Tyre.  The obverse has a head of Melqarth similar to that which appeared on the 'shekels' and 'half-shekels' of an earlier period.  This deity came to be equated with the Greek Herakles and was especially revered at Tyre.  The reverse type depicts the front elevation of an eight-columned temple dedicated to the Koinon, or league, of Phoenician cities which doubtless held its meetings in Tyre.

Note from Pete Burbules - The reverse legend means Nikomedia, Second (DIC) Neocory (NEOKO), the second neocory bestowed on the town, an honor earned by the city by building and maintaining a temple dedicated to the Roman emperor.

General note from Curtis Clay on the Moneta-L email list:  "Neokopos. 'Temple adorner', a name given to the warden or sacristan of a temple."  (J. Melville-Jones, Dict. of Anc. Greek Coins, p. 155)  In Roman times a Greek city that constructed and cared for a provincial temple of the emperor, and that oversaw the periodic festival and games connected with that temple, was permitted to assume the title Neokopos.  If it cared for two such temples, then "twice neocorate" and so on. The damnatio of an emperor honored by such a temple would mean the loss of the neocorate, unless the temple was transferred to another honoree, so the neocorate number could fall as well as increase. These privileges and titles were keenly sought after and honorary titles including Neokoros, the temples which justified the neocorates, and the games celebrated in that connection, are some of the commonest themes on Greek city coinages during the Roman empire."

Note from Curtis Clay: (The inscription translates to) Imperator Caesar C. Vibius Trebonianus Gallus and Volusian the Augusti. The KAI in the middle is the Greek word for "and", not "Caesar" abbreviated. The final word is normally CEBB with two Bs meaning the plural Augusti, but the second B seems to be filled in on the die or perhaps omitted in error on your coin. So both Gallus and Volusian are Augusti on this coin, which was the usual condition throughout most of the reign since Volusian was only Caesar for a month or two at the beginning before being raised to joint Augustus with his father after Hostilian's death. Gallus never held the position of Caesar or Designated Successor.
