RIC VII, 122 (R5)

Note: RIC does not list a series with field marks of S | P with a star. In 317, RIC lists a series S / + | P and is the only series with a field mark with letters for this reverse type. However, some notes from Ben Bridgwater and Paul DiMarzio clear up the confusion - 'It seems that "+" vs "*" in RIC may be an error. In Kent's "The Pattern of Bronze Coinage under Constantine I" he lists the mark as S / * | P rather than S / + | P, and in BM Occasional Paper # 59 (Coin Hoards from Roman Britain Vol VII), the 1970 Burton-on-Trent hoard # 51 is also described as S / * | P.'

RIC VII, --

Note: The reverse type is listed in RIC for Constantine I, however, the listed types for Crispus with this reverse legend all have prince, helmeted, standing right, reversed spear in right hand, left hand on shield. This is either a new type for Crispus, or a mule of a Crispus obverse and Constantine I reverse. Most likely, this is a reverse die for Constantine I, since the figure is laureate and not helmeted or bare-headed, although bare-headed and laureate examples exist for Crispus from other mints. Also, this reverse die shows a legend break unlisted in RIC. The expected break is V_V and footnotes on p.105 also document examples with A-I but none with I_V.

Note: Not in RIC with CLARITAS reverse for crescent | * series - It is erroneously listed under the previous mintmark, per research and email from Lee Toone on November 29, 2008. Another example of this type was recorded in the Waddington hoard. The footnote to RIC VII 119 confirms that 148 belongs to the crescent / star // PLN issue.

Note: B3 bust type not attested in RIC for this issue.

Note: RIC footnotes #164 "is, so to speak, a forewarning of the subsequent issue which was to include obverses of the sons of Constantine". Also, RIC notes for #158, an example with a shield on the altar, referring to the Senckler collection, but was unable to verify. Perhaps this example is another of the "shield on altar" type, as RIC does not describe in any other footnotes a type with large circle and center dot. Jeff Clark agrees with me on the "shield on altar" proposal for this coin.

Note: Although this is attributed as RIC 284, the description in RIC is C3l bust type, which this is not. It is either C2l, which is unattested in RIC for this coin, or radiate, cuirassed bust left, seen from behind, which is not an attested bust type in RIC for this period. However, consulting with other collectors on this piece, the bust type is consistent with examples in their collections and since the RIC coin is not plated, there is some ambiguity as to what the authors of RIC actually observed in their documentation.
