RIC Volume VII - Constantine and Licinius: Arles/Constantina Mint

Constantine I, AE Follis, 313-315, Arles, Officina 1
IMP CONSTANTINVS P F AVG
Laureate, cuirassed bust right
SOLI INV_I_CTO COMITI
Sol, radiate, standing facing, head left, chlamys across left shoulder, right hand raised, globe in left
PARL in exergue
20mm x 21mm, 3.35g
RIC VII, 41 (R4)

Z5846 - to be photographed

EF, some weakly struck areas caused by an overstrike of an undermined host coin, mutliple die breaks on reverse

Constantine I, AE Follis, Later 316, Arles, Officina 1
IMP CONSTANTINVS P F AVG
Laureate, draped, cuirassed bust right
SOLI INV_I_CTO COMITI
Sol, radiate, standing facing, head left, chlamys across left shoulder, right hand raised, globe in left
M | F across fields
ARLA in exergue
18mm x 20mm, 3.31g
RIC VII, 102 (R3)

Note: An exceptionally unusual die break on the reverse makes it appear as though Sol is holding a branch upward in his right hand. Although this attribute is common on antoniniani, it is not known on Late Roman bronzes.

Constantine II, AE3, 317, Arles, Officina 2
CONSTANTINVS IVN NOB CAES
Laureate, draped, cuirassed bust right
CLARIT_A_S REIPVB
Sol, radiate, standing facing, head left, chlamys across left shoulder, right hand raised, globe in left
R | S across fields
SARL in exergue
19mm x 20mm, 3.74g
RIC VII, 118 (R2)

Crispus, AE3, 317, Arles, Officina 4
CRISPVS NOB CAES
Laureate, draped, cuirassed bust right, seen from behind
PRINCIPIA I_V_VENTVTIS

R | S across fields
QARL in exergue
19mm x 20mm, 3.31g
RIC VII, 129 (R2)

Note: It could be argued this bust type is actually laureate, draped seen from behind, as there is no evidence of a cuirass under the paludamentum. However, RIC does not list such a bust type for the Constantinian period.

Licinius II, AE3, 317-318, Arles, Officina 3
VAL LICINIVS NOB CAES
Laureate, draped, cuirassed bust right
IOVI CONSER_VATORI
Jupiter standing left, chlamys across left shoulder, thunderbolt in right hand, scepter in left
C | S across fields
TARL in exergue
18mm, 2.62g
RIC VII, 142 (S)

Crispus, AE3, 317-318, Arles, Officina 4

Laureate, draped, cuirassed bust right
PRINCIPIA IVV_ENTVTIS

C | S across fields
QARL in exergue
20mm, 2.80g
RIC VII, 143 (S)

Note: The celator apparently mangled the O in NOB of the obverse legend, leaving NVB instead.

Constantine I, AE3, 317-318, Arles, Officina 4
IMP CONSTANTINVS P F AVG
Laureate, cuirassed bust right
SOLI INV_I_CTO COMITI
Sol, radiate, standing facing, leaning left, head left, chlamys across left shoulder, right hand raised, globe in left

QARL in exergue
19mm x 20mm, 3.47g
RIC VII, 146 (R4)

Note: RIC describes this position as "standing left".

SOLI INVI_CTO COMITI

PARL in exergue
18mm x 20mm, 3.66g
RIC VII, 150 (S)

Note: RIC describes this position as "standing right".

Constantine I, AE3, 318, Arles, Officina 1
IMP CONSTANTINVS P F AVG
Laureate, draped, cuirassed bust right
SOLI INV_I_CTO COMITI

IMP LICI_NIVS AVG
Laureate, cuirassed bust right
IOVI CONSERVATORI-AVG
Jupiter, nude but for chlamys over left shoulder, scepter in left hand, thunderbolt in right, riding on back of eagle standing right, head right, wings horizontal
SARL in exergue
17mm x 18mm, 2.72g
RIC VII, 196 (R2)
Ex Vel Garnett Collection

Note: RIC describes the reverse figure as emperor on eagleback, however, I am describing him as Jupiter as all of the attributes - eagle, scepter, thunderbolt, nude with chlamys - all point to the figure being Jupiter. Most likely, this has been addressed in scholarship more recent than RIC VII, so I will endeavor to find more information on the subject.

Constantine I, AE3, 319-320, Arles, Officina 1
CONSTAN_TINVS AVG

Legend surrounding wreath, terminating with rosette and pellet, enclosing VOT / . / X
T star in crescent A in exergue
19mm x 20mm, 3.24g
RIC VII, 244 (R1)

Note: RIC describes 241 and 244 identically, thus I believe 244 and 245 are supposed to be described as VOT X reverse and not VOT V. Since the coins are not plated and there is nothing in addenda and corrigenda on p. 713, but there is a footnote on p. 260 for a Licinius II example with VOT X, I can only conclude the descriptions are incorrect.

RIC VII, 252 variant
Ex Killingholme Hoard

Note: The reverse legend is misspelled - the D is missing from D(ominor) N(ostror). Also, the lettering style is just a touch crude, suggesting this is an imitative piece of good style, of which there were numerous in the Killingholme Hoard.

ARL in exergue
19mm x 20mm, 1.84g
RIC VII, --
Ex Lucie Courcy, eBay, November 2006

Note: Although of quite official looking style, the exergual mark is unknown for regular Arles issues, the reverse is usually for Constantine I and there is always a star on campgates of Constantine and his family once the campgate reverse was officially rolled out to the rest of the empire in 324 (Heraclea minted campgates from 313 and on and Rome was experimenting with different types before the rollout). Also note, there is no officina mark on this coin. Much more research is needed.

Note: Same as RIC VII, 273 with different bust type. The obverse legend is misspelled - should be CONSTANTINVS. Also, the exergue mark is incorrect - should be T*AR and appears to be a deliberate P and not just a mis-struck R.

Note: RIC VII does not attest a series with a pellet anywhere on the reverse with the exception of a pellet within a wreath during 333-334. As this specimen has no other series marks in the exergue and field, and has two standards instead of one, I am ascribing this to c.330 AD when the GLORIA EXERCITVS series was introduced at Constantina with this exergual mark and no series marks. RIC cites two unique coins, one of Constantine I and one of Constantius II from this very first series, both residing in the British Museum. Possibly the series with the pellet field mark was minted immediately after the first series and before the next series from 330-331 with this same exergual mark but a star in the field or exergue.

Note: The bull's head on banner represents Legio VIII Augusta stationed in Argentorate (Straatsburg). Legion VIII was one of the oldest units in the Roman army, having been in battle with Julius Caesar in Gaul in 58BC and stationed in Argentorate from 70 AD (under Vespasian) until into the fifth century, defending the Rhine territories. Personal note of thanks to Dane Kurth for determining the banner design from another specimen with the same devices on a coin of Constantine II from the same series.
