Victorinus, Antoninianus, 268-270, Cologne (RIC and Zschucke) or Trier (Cunetio)
IMP C VICTORINVS P F AVG
Radiate, draped, cuirassed bust right
VIRTVS-AVG
Soldier standing left, right hand resting on shield, transverse spear in left
19mm x 20mm, 2.96g
RIC V, Part II, --
Ex CNG, Electronic Auction 121, Lot 244, August 2005
Note: RIC does not list this reverse type with soldier standing left for the Southern Mint and not at all for Cologne. Also,
this example is overstruck on another coin, but the host coin cannot be readily determined. There appears to be remnants of the
letter C in the reverse right field and perhaps branches of a coin with a Pax reverse in left field. The fine style, lack of
obverse legend punctuation (that I can see), existence of a reverse field mark and smaller features of the reverse figure seem
to suggest this piece was minted in Cologne vs. the "Southern Mint".
Follow-up note from Lars Rutten: Zschucke, Die römische Münzstätte Köln, attributes your coin to Cologne mint, sixth emission,
second officina (Zschucke 210) and rates it as R2. It isn’t listed in Elmers Münzprägung der gallischen Kaiser.
Follow-up note from Steve Minnoch: 5 specimens of this type (but soldier facing right, not left) were in the Cunetio Hoard,
(Cunetio 2550). You might also note the punctuation in the obv, i.e. IMP C VICTORINVS.P.F.AVG The mints for Victorinus (and
this continues for Tetricus) are identified by the bust type, Mint I (in RIC, Cologne, but according to Cunetio, probably
Trier) uses draped and cuirassed busts, Mint II (Southern mint in RIC, but Cologne according to Cunetio) cuirassed only. Your
coin is thus Mint I, probably Trier.
Follow-up note from Philippe Gysen: Schulzki #24 which is quoted "S" (between 41 and 100 examples); Elmer 699 (Cologne, 8th
emission, beginning 270 AD); De Witte plate XXX, 98
