Domitian, AR Denarius, 81, Second Issue, Rome
IMP CAES DOMITIAN AVG PONT
Laureate head right
TR P COS VII-DES VIII P P
Winged thunderbolt facing left on draped table
18mm x 19mm, 2.89g
RIC II, --
Note: This reverse type is not attested in RIC for the Second Issue of 81 and the obverse legend is footnoted for a different reverse as
"7. C. 57, 58 gives DOMITIAN in obv. legend, in error. C. 372 gives same rev., but in inverted order, P P COS VII DES VIII
(obv. DOMITIANVS)." So, either the description by Cohen was plated and the authors of RIC are correct in fixing the attribution, or, Cohen 57 and
58 really did have an obverse legend of DOMITIAN and RIC mistakenly "corrects" it. Either way, this obverse legend is not listed in
RIC.

Domitian, AR Denarius, 82, First Issue, Rome
IMP CAES DOMITIANVS AVG P M
Laureate head right
TR POT-COS VIII P P
Winged thunderbolt facing left on draped table
18mm x 19mm, 3.34g
RIC II, 24v (C for type)
Note: RIC describes this reverse as thunderbolt on throne. It is not plated, so
I cannot determine if the winged thunderbolt is expected or is not
attested in RIC. A search on-line did not produce any examples of this
coin, however, examples with and without wings for other COS issues were
found. As such, I will list this as a variant to 24.

Note: The reverse legend is incorrect for this obverse. The ancient
counterfeiter missed the second X, as this should read IMP XXII. The
silver outer shell is nearly intact, but there are a few small spots where
the core is visible.
