Note: This specimen seems unusual - the fonts are rendered a bit more carefully than usual, similar to those found on the antoniniani from the Eastern mints, thus the attribution to possibly Antioch, as per the footnotes in RIC on p. 33. Also, the manufacture of the flan also seems unusual and more carefully prepared than often encountered.

Note: Vel apparently bought this specimen as an authentic example of RIC 214 based on the attribution tag. In hand, the flan is too perfect, the metal appears to be very high quality silver and the fonts, portrait and bust type are incorrect for the issue. No flow lines or cast seem, so this is most likely a pressed fake.

Note: RIC only lists this reverse legend on 213 for Antioch on an antoninianus, but without the N. This type was not minted at Rome, nor in base metal denominations. Unusually thin flan and appears to be somewhat crystalized. Vel attributed this coin as RIC 213A with a rating of R3, however, RIC does not describe this coin at all, so I am not certain how he determined this designation.

Note: RIC lists 82 (R2) with reverse AVGG and footnotes on p. 78 "C.8 has AVG on rev - in error". Bland lists the AVG type and the footnote in RIC is obviously the error and not Cohen.

AEQVITAS AVGG
Aequitas standing facing, head left, scales in right hand, cornucopiae in left

RIC IV, Part III, 82v; Bland 18
Ex Vel Garnett Collection

Note: This piece seems unusual in hand. The flan is quite flat and there are a couple of light file marks on the edge in two spots. One of the spots on the edge is at 12-o'clock and chipped the flan in the margin on the obverse, but the core appears to be silver, so this is not likely a fourree. The devices are somewhat mushy and there are no apparent flow lines in the fields, suggesting possibly a cast piece, however, it could also be a combination of wear and overcleaning. The thickness of the letters in the legends are also somewhat odd, but could be the result of an imbalanced strike. The style is Antiocheni, but is only listed in RIC with left facing bust type.

22mm x 24mm, 4.76g
RIC IV, Part III, 125c (C)
Ex Vel Garnett Collection

Note: The "pellet” in the obverse legend appears to be more of a spacer for the engraver versus an actual device meant to be struck up on the coins themselves as this piece seems to have been struck from very fresh dies. Most likely the “pellet” is not as evident on later strikes from this die and would instead appear more like an intentional space.

Note: RIC describes the reverse figure as emperor on eagleback, however, I am describing him as Jupiter as all of the attributes - eagle, scepter, thunderbolt, nude with chlamys - all point to the figure being Jupiter. Most likely, this has been addressed in scholarship more recent than RIC VII, so I will endeavor to find more information on the subject.

Note: The expected exergual mark for this series is always preceded by an R for the Rome mint. On this specimen, it appears as though the R has been omitted, based on the overall balanced composition of the reverse legend positions, which would put the missing R on the dotted border. The unfortunate flan absence exactly where the R would appear leaves some speculation as to whether this is an error, an unlisted exergual mark or the normal type.
